How to treat fungal nail infections: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

We know how impairing fungal nail infections can be, preventing you from certain activities and even day in the life tasks and that’s why we’re here to help guide your journey of repair.

What are fungal nail infections?

A fungal nail infection occurs when a fungus attacks a fingernail or toenail. The fungus most often infects the toenails and can cause the nail to become thickened, discolored, and deformed. It can also cause the nail to separate from the nail bed. A fungal nail infection can be difficult to treat and may recur.

There are many different types of fungi that can cause a nail infection. The most common type is dermatophyte, which is the same type of fungus that causes athlete's foot. Nail infections can also be caused by yeasts and molds.

Fungal nail infections are more common in toenails than in fingernails. This is because the toenails are often confined in a dark and moist environment, which is ideal for the growth of fungi. People who have diabetes or a weakened immune system are at an increased risk of developing a fungal nail infection.

Symptoms of a fungal nail infection may include:

· Thickened nails

· Brittle nails

· Nails that are crumbly or ragged

· Nails that separate from the nail bed

· Nails that are yellow, brown, or green in color

· Nails that have a bad odor

· Pain or tenderness in the nails

If you have any of these symptoms, you should contact either Jane or Dan at Absolute Foot Care, we can then diagnose a fungal nail infection by looking at the nails and testing a sample of the nail for fungi. We operate in Cannock and areas surrounding Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shropshire.

Treatment for a fungal nail infection may include:

  • Oral antifungal medications

  • Topical antifungal medications

  • Surgical removal of the infected nail

The most effective treatment for a fungal nail infection is oral antifungal medication. However, these medications can cause side effects, so they are not suitable for everyone. At Absolute Foot Care we will assess the best option for you, in which case we may alternatively apply topical antifungal creams as they are less likely to cause side effects.

You can help prevent a fungal nail infection by:

· Wearing shoes that fit well and are made of breathable materials

· Wearing socks that absorb moisture

· Keeping your feet clean and dry

· Avoiding walking barefoot in public places

· Avoiding sharing nail clippers or other personal items

At Absolute Foot Care we can treat you at our clinic or in the comfort of your own home. We provide specialist treatments in and around Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shropshire focusing on areas such as Cannock, North Canes and Chasetown.
